OVERFLOW

 A lake, ponded behind a resistant bedrock high, eventually overspills the lowest divide.  The overflowing water, in time, erodes a canyon through the resistant bedrock high if there is a sufficient gradient for erosion to be necessary for the drainage to establish an equalized channel.
